Popoia Island Kailua surf guide

Popoia Island, also known as Flat Island, is a four-acre isle situated about a quarter of a mile off Kailua Beach Park in Kailua. This spot offers a unique atmosphere for surfers looking for something a little different. The journey out here involves a long paddle from the beach, but once you’re out there, it can be worth it. The island's setting is pretty pristine, making it a nice escape from more crowded surf spots nearby.

The waves here are mostly mellow, breaking over a reef. You can expect a left point break that wraps around the island, which is great for beginners and longboarders. There’s also a shorter right break, adding a bit of variety. Swell sizes typically range from 3 to 5 feet (about 1 to 1.5 meters), with the best conditions coming from north to northeast swells. The wind plays a big role here as well; it's best when it’s calm or offshore from the south to west, especially after a passing front in the winter. Keep in mind that the onshore trades can get strong during summer, usually leaving the surf a bit choppy.

Paddling out can be a workout, especially since you’ll have to make long paddles back after riding those long waves. Be aware that while it’s often not too crowded, you might run into more surfers on weekends when the conditions are cleaner and the swells are pumping. If you’re looking to improve your skills or just enjoy an easy-going wave, Popoia Island can be a solid choice, particularly during the winter months when the swells are more consistent.
