Cliffs surf guide

Cliffs is a surf spot located below the Diamond Head Rd lookouts. It features a collection of 5-6 reefs and channels that create a scattered surf environment. The spot can get crowded, especially with both surfers and kitesurfers, but the layout helps absorb the number of people. Cliffs picks up south and east swells, making it a bit messy during trade winds. However, on days when the north swell is in or everything is glassy, it can provide fun and memorable sessions. It's often one of the biggest spots on the South Shore.

The waves here are mostly left and right reef breaks, working best with a swell size around 2-6 ft (0.6-1.8 m). Intermediate surfers will find plenty of long, ripable walls that offer good rides. The best conditions happen on a low to mid tide, especially when the wind is coming from the north. However, keep in mind that as the size increases, the paddle-out channel can disappear, and some rips can form around the area.

If you're heading out, it's worth checking the swell directions. South and southeast swells are optimal, while southwest swells can also deliver decent waves. Just be prepared for a bit of a workout when paddling out, especially if it's a bigger day. There are less crowded areas on the side of the main peak, which can be a good option if you're looking for something a bit mushier.
