Merewether surf guide

Merewether is a well-known surf spot located in Newcastle, Australia. It's the go-to place for local surfers and has a relaxed vibe where you can often find a mix of skill levels. The area is particularly famous for its southern reef section called Ladies, which is a bit more powerful and attracts experienced surfers looking for solid waves. Just up the beach at Dixon Park, you can find some more options, but they may not have the same intensity as Ladies.

The waves at Merewether can get pretty hefty, especially when the swell is coming from the east or even the northeast. You’ll see solid swells starting around 3ft (about 1 meter) and going up to triple overhead at times. The right-hand waves break over both uneven reef and sandy bottoms. Low to mid tide works best, and you’ll want a westerly wind to keep things clean. If the swell is heavy and the conditions are right, you can expect some nice barreling peaks, but it’s definitely a spot for intermediate surfers or better since it can get quite crowded and competitive.

Be prepared for the crowds at Ladies, as many surfers are eager to catch the waves and aren't shy about snaking a ride. If you prefer a less intense session, there are lefts and alternating peaks at Dixon Park, which can add a little variety to your day. Just keep in mind that during summer, the onshore winds can make the waves a bit mushy. Overall, Merewether is a spot that delivers for those ready to tackle its challenges.
