Nosara surf guide

Nosara is a surf destination located along the Guanacaste Coast, covering much of the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica. This area is known for its dry climate due to the strong Papagayo winds that blow for about half the year. The main surfing area in Nosara is Playa Guiones, which offers a wide-open beach setup that attracts surfers looking for consistent waves. The beach stretches for about two miles, providing plenty of space to find your spot, but be mindful of the locals and the crowd, especially during the busy summer season.

The surf at Nosara can be pretty good, especially when the swell is coming from the south or southwest. It handles swell sizes from around 5 ft to 7 ft (1.5 to 2.1 meters) at mid to high tide, and the waves can vary from beach breaks to point breaks. Expect both lefts and rights, giving options for different types of riders. The bottom is mostly sand, which helps create some nice waves, but there are also rock formations you should be aware of. This spot is suitable for all skill levels, from beginners to experts; just make sure to pick your time and spot wisely to enjoy yourself.

Access to the beach is straightforward, with informal parking along the road leading to Playa Guiones. The town has made efforts to keep the first section of the beach undeveloped to help protect the coastline's nature. Despite the crowd factor, especially during peak seasons like spring and summer, the vibe at Playa Guiones is generally friendly, and most surfers are happy to share waves. There's a mix of shortboards, funboards, longboards, and even fish or bodyboards being used here. Keep an eye on the wind, which is usually best from the northeast to east, to ensure a fun day out on the water.
