Oostende is the biggest coastal city in Belgium and has some surf spots that can be fun, especially around the harbour pier. It's best to catch the waves at low and mid tide. The spot is pretty dependent on onshore winds to really bring in the swell, so keep an eye on the weather. While mushy close-outs are pretty common, you might get lucky and find some faster walls lining up every now and then.
For the surf itself, Oostende can handle swell sizes around 1 ft (0.3 meters) and works best when the swell comes from the North, Northwest, or Northeast. The waves here break over sand, so it's generally beginner-friendly with both left and right waves available. The ideal wind direction is Southeast, and the spot really shines at low and mid tide. If you’re just starting out and looking for something chill, Oostende can be a decent choice.
Summer surfing can be limited as lessons and board rentals are usually managed by the surf club Outside, located to the west of the Thermae Place Hotel. Just know that during this time, you might have to keep an eye on the restrictions in place for surfing here.
