Orewa Beach/Bar is located closer to Auckland on the east coast. This area is known for its softer breaks, making it a solid choice for surfers looking for a more laid-back session. The breaks here are generally small, with the typical size being around 1ft (0.3 meters). It’s a popular spot, especially during the summer months when it can get a bit crowded, so be prepared if you're heading out during peak times.
The surf at Orewa Bar works on a NorthEast swell, with optimal conditions showing up when the wind is coming from the west. The waves can break both left and right, mainly over sandy bottoms. Their long, soft nature makes them perfect for beginners, longboarders, and stand-up paddleboarders. When the tide is low or mid, you’ll find the best waves rolling in, and the constant reforms at Orewa Beach are great for learners who want to practice their skills without feeling overwhelmed.
Access is pretty straightforward. From Auckland, just head north on the Auckland Northern Motorway (State Highway 1) and take a right onto Hibiscus Coast Highway, continuing into Orewa. It’s best to find a parking spot near the estuary mouth at the southern end of the beach. Enjoy your time out there!
