Surf: For classic rivermouth rights, hit Pataua Bar but remember the quality depends on river flow and a NE swell. Tricky take-offs and barrels for experienced surfers. Directions: From Whangarei, head north on Bank Street and continue north on Mill Road, then turn right onto Whareora Road. At Whareora turn right onto Pataua North Road, all the way to Pataua. At Pataua turn left onto Aubrey Road, then turn right onto Te Whangai Head Road and find a park at the end. Walk out onto the beach and check the river mouth break. Environment: If the Bar isn't working, try Ocean Beach for larger, reliable, powerful peaks along a 6km stretch.
