Whananaki North is a surf spot located at a rivermouth that's known for its unique waves. This spot works best with a Southeast swell and is popular among surfers looking for long, peeling lefts. The best waves here break over sand and typically handle swell sizes starting from 2ft (0.6m) up to around 6ft (2m). When the tide is low to mid, you can catch some nice whackable sections. The waves can close out when they get over 6ft (2m), so it's a good idea to keep an eye on the size. Winds from the Northwest are preferable, and the surf direction here is predominantly from the left, which is something to keep in mind when paddling out.
Be aware that the outgoing tide can create some rippy conditions at the rivermouth. Also, for those looking for a quieter surf experience, Whananaki South just down the way offers some decent beach breaks that can be less crowded on their good days.
