Patong is a sandy beach break that most people know for its shopping and nightlife rather than its surf. The bay is well protected from swell and wind, so the waves here are often just a close-out, and there will almost always be something better breaking elsewhere. What it does offer is a straight-hander that beginners can have some fun on.
When It Works
Patong picks up swell from the southwest through west, and a west swell is the best match. It's usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, and given how sheltered the bay is, the bigger end of that range is when it's worth a look. Waves break both left and right over sand, though consistency is on the shy side, so it pays to check it rather than commit to it.
Wind and Tide
Look for east offshore wind. The beach can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. In bigger swells, mid tide is worth timing your check around.
Local Tips
This is a beginner's wave, best suited to anyone still getting comfortable with a straight take-off and a bit of whitewater. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working.
Access
There's roadside parking and it's free, so getting in and out is easy. Restrooms are on hand, and the beach is lifeguarded.
