Pedra Branca surf guide

Pedra Branca, or White Rock, is a well-known surf spot located in Ericeira, Portugal. It's right across from the main campsite and easy to spot from town. The wave is highly visible and really exposed to different swell and wind conditions. The surf here can vary quite a bit; on smaller days, you'll find a fun, shallow left that peels nicely along the flat rock slab. But when the Autumn swells roll in, it can change dramatically, producing heavy waves that break onto a shallow ledge, creating square barrels that can reach double overhead (about 6 meters). This spot tends to get crowded, especially with expert locals looking to score when conditions are good.

The left reef at Pedra Branca is serious business, particularly at low tide when it can get really hollow and sketchy. It works best with a southwesterly swell and east winds and can handle swell sizes from around 2 feet (0.6 meters) up to 8 feet (2.4 meters). Tides can affect the surf, but mid to high tide works best. If you’re an expert surfer, you’ll likely enjoy the fast, hollow barrels that break over the uneven reef, but be aware that it can get competitive out there with a small take-off zone. There’s also a nice right-surfing option that peels over sand and reef in the bay just south of Pedra Branca, making it suitable for a wider range of abilities.

When you're heading out to lunch with the waves, it’s good to keep in mind the presence of spiky sea urchins and the shallow ledge that can catch you off guard. Paddling out is generally easy once you navigate past the rocks, thanks to its accessible location. The best seasons to hit Pedra Branca are from September to May, so plan your trip around those months for optimal conditions.
