The Reef is a little finger of lava that juts out at the far south tip of Ribeira Bay. It's known for its powerful waves that can come in quickly, especially during north swells. You'll want to be on your game because this spot can get really intense, and it's important to respect the locals who often surf here. The access is straightforward with a dirt lot nearby, but be prepared for a crowd when the waves are good. The atmosphere can feel a bit tight due to the close-knit local scene, so patience is key if you're planning to catch some waves.
This spot works best with NW to W swells, handling sizes from 1.2m to 2.1m (4ft to 7ft). When the conditions are right, the waves can really pack a punch, breaking over rock and creating some challenging right-handers. The best time to surf here is past low to medium tides, and it's usually good for expert surfers only. You'll want to be ready for some quick drops and fast tubes with little room for error. If you manage to make the ledgey drop from behind the peak, you might get a brief but fantastic view as you ride the wave. Just avoid going for floaters in the inside section, as it can get tricky.
If the tight tubes and sharp reef aren’t your thing, there are other waves nearby. Piedra Branca is a hollow left that works at high tide, just 100 yards south. There's also a mushy right just south of the Reef and, on bigger swells, a left that breaks off the north edge. Ideal wind directions include northeast and east, and the best seasons to hit the Reef are autumn and spring. Just keep in mind that winter can whip up some challenging wind and weather conditions. Bring your shortboard to ride these waves!
