Pico Alto surf guide

Pico Alto is one of South America's biggest waves, located in the Punta Hermosa district, just south of Lima. This spot is known for its powerful and heavy surf, drawing big-wave surfers from all over. It's quite a trek to get there, with a long paddle of about 1 kilometer from Playa Norte to reach the break. The view from the headland might make it look manageable, but out in the water, it's a different ball game. It’s best suited for experienced surfers due to the challenging conditions.

The wave generally starts working around 12-15 feet (approximately 4-5 meters) and can hold up to 30 feet (about 9 meters) or even more. Right-handers are the main draw for surfers, offering a long, thick wall that can deliver extended rides. The left can also be surfed but tends to be less favorable. It’s essential to have a big gun board, as the wave breaks over an uneven reef, and it's best surfed with a southwest swell, though it also handles swells coming from the south and west. The ideal conditions are with glassy or east winds and low to mid tides.

Paddling out to Pico Alto requires some serious stamina due to the heavy surf and long distance. Be prepared for the possibility of hold downs, as the wave can deliver two or more in a row. Crowd levels can vary, and it definitely has a classic big-wave camaraderie vibe among local surfers. The best time to visit is from April to August when conditions are most favorable.
