Playa El Rey surf guide

Playa El Rey is located about 11 km (7 mi) from Roncador, offering a somewhat isolated beach experience. This long stretch of sand features fair to good quality waves, making it a spot worth checking out. You’ll find it especially appealing near the Rio Naranjo rivermouth. While the spot doesn’t always have the best consistency, it tends to be bigger than nearby breaks when the conditions are right. Expect to find light crowds, especially when it’s good, as local surfers from Quepos and Manuel Antonio often come here.

The surf at Playa El Rey works best with swells coming from the South or West. It handles swell sizes starting at 2ft (0.6m) and can produce both left and right peaks, mainly breaking over sand. If you're a beginner, you’ll find it suitable during low, mid, and high tides, but it’s best when the wind is coming from the North. Keep in mind that the waves can close out on bigger days, so pay attention to the conditions.

If you're planning to camp, you'll need to bring all your supplies, as amenities are limited. It’s a great spot to enjoy some waves away from the hustle and bustle, and you might notice good vibes given its mellow local scene.
