More about Port O'Connor Jetties surfspot

General: Port O’Connor, on the Central Texas coast, is a sleepy little town during the week, but on weekends it is swarmed by fishermen. The 'big jetties' as they are called, slicing through the Matagorda Peninsula, are a 20+ minute boat ride out from town. Depending on the swell and wind direction, either side of the jetties could be working, so it is best to try to take a visual from the channel before seeking a safe landing spot for your boat on the bay side of the island.

Once you make the walk across the island, assuming there is some swell, you will find well groomed sandbars that work well on S & SE swells, although the real magic comes when hurricanes drive through the gulf on their way to a landfall further east. Can handle larger swells than most spots in the region due to the length of the jetties. Tides: Medium Size: Waist high to a double overhead Wind: N, NW or W with swell Swell: S, SE, E Bottom: Sand. Paddling: The jetties minimize the drift. Spot Rating: Fun on most days with swell but comes to life on big hurricane swells.
