Potato Point surf guide

Potato Point is a surf spot that offers a decent experience for surfers looking for some waves. It’s well sheltered from strong south winds, making it a good choice when conditions are a bit rougher elsewhere. The break has some multi-sectioned rights that offer a fun ride, especially for those just getting into surfing.

The spot works best with a north-east swell (about 0.6 meters) and can handle swell sizes up to around 2 feet (0.6 meters). The waves generally break over boulders and sand, so it’s important to choose your line carefully. For the best results, look for low to mid tide, and if the wind is coming from the south-west, you'll find some nice, clean waves. This place is pretty beginner-friendly, making it a good spot to practice and get comfortable on your board.

Getting to Potato Point means a long paddle from the rivermouth, so be prepared for that. The area also offers some waves along Purakaunui Beach and on the other side of Doctor's Point, giving you a bit of variety if you want to explore around the spot.
