Punaluu is the last of the road-accessible surf spots before you hit the Puna Trail and those hike-in breaks. Located at Punaluu Black Sand Beach Park, you'll find a unique beach environment where you can chill out on the dark volcanic sand. Just keep in mind it can get pretty crowded with tourists enjoying the scenery.
When it comes to surfing, conditions can get a bit messy and blown out most of the time. However, if you hit it right with some rare northwest winds, you might score some decent rights. The optimal swell direction is southeast, but it can also handle swells coming from the east and southwest. The spot works well with swell sizes starting from around 2 feet (0.6 meters). Waves break over a mix of uneven reef and sand, providing both beach breaks and the chance to ride left and right. Ideal wind comes from the northwest, and you’ll find it works at low, mid, and high tide, making it suitable for intermediate surfers looking for a mellow ride.
Weirdly enough, don’t be surprised if you see a good number of surfers in the water, even on a weekday. Punaluu can attract a mix of locals and visitors, especially during peak times. Just be aware that it's not one of those secret spots, so expect a few other folks out there with you.
