Punta Conejo is a well-known surf spot located just west of Salina Cruz. It's recognized as one of the top pointbreaks in the area, attracting surfers who are looking for long rides and reliable waves. The access is straightforward via 4x4, though it's essential to have a local guide when you go. Just keep in mind that with the rise of surf camps nearby, it can get crowded on good days.
The surf here really shines on long-period south swells, ideally coming from the SSE to SSW directions. The wave is a right-hander that peels over a sand bottom, making it user-friendly for those with some experience. You'll find it's best surfed with low to mid tides and preferable winds blowing from the W or SW. When the conditions are right, waves can range from waist high (around 0.6 m) to well overhead (3 m or more), and serious surfers can ride for up to 500 m. Even though it can be inconsistent at times, when it’s on, you can score ten-turn rides and occasional barrels within the inside section.
With its clean environment and consistent appeal, Punta Conejo has become a favorite for both intermediate and expert surfers. You might want to bring a shortboard, fish, funboard, or longboard depending on the day's conditions. Just be wary of the crowd, as the vibes can get a bit territorial, and remember to be respectful out there. If you practice a bit of patience, you might just snag a few epic waves to make your trip worthwhile.
