Quatro Ribeiras surf guide

Quatro Ribeiras is a surf spot located on the north coast, known for its powerful waves and challenging conditions. It's a popular choice among experienced surfers looking for a test. With its scenic backdrop of rugged cliffs, the spot offers a unique surf experience, but don't expect it to be a laid-back hangout since it’s mostly for experts.

The waves here break mainly from the northwest, with the optimal swell direction coming from the northwest as well. You’ll find both left and right-handers, but the lefts off the deepwater cliffs are usually the main attraction, offering a fast ride across the bay before eventually closing out on a boulder beach. The right-hander to the east is a bit more forgiving, but it can still pack a punch. It’s best to catch the waves when they’re overhead, as they can handle swells up to about 2 meters (6ft). Being an uneven reef break, it’s crucial to be cautious while surfing, especially during high tide when getting out can be tricky.

As for access, park at the end of a steep dirt road to reach the spot, but keep in mind that the currents can be strong, and there are sharks in the area year-round. If you plan to surf here, aim for low to mid-tide for the best conditions. Because of its challenging nature, there are rarely many surfers around, making it a bit quieter even on good days.
