Safi is a surf spot located near the industrial city of Safi, Morocco. It's known for its exciting surf potential but can be quite unpredictable. For a long time, it was somewhat of a hidden gem, but more surfers have been discovering it in recent years, especially as pros have sought out its unique waves. The area features a mix of rocky and sandy points which contribute to its reputation as one of the best barreling spots in Morocco, though it’s important to note that the waves here are heavy and can be dangerous.
The waves at Safi usually work best during winter, when swells can range from about 1 meter (3 ft) to 3 meters (10 ft). The ideal conditions occur at low tide, with the best years seeing only a couple of days when the waves really fire. When it's on, the spot can offer fast, throaty barrels that break predominantly to the right. The most favorable wind direction is from the East, and a Northwest swell can work well here. Keep in mind, though, that it tends to attract crowds when the surf is good, and it’s mainly suited for expert surfers due to the heavy paddling required and the challenging conditions.
Access to the spot is straightforward: just head into the town of Safi and drive out to the point. Given its industrial backdrop, it’s surprising how nice the environment is around the surf area. Be prepared for some competition in the lineup, as the local bodyboarders do know how to hold their ground. While it’s not exactly a daily surf spot, when the conditions align, Safi can offer an unforgettable experience for those who are ready to take on its power.
