Sainte-Barbe is a surf spot located in a picturesque area, attracting surfers of various skill levels. It features a mix of waves that cater to beginners and intermediates, making it an accessible choice for those looking to ride some surf. The environment is laid-back, and it’s a spot that often gets busy, especially when other nearby locations are not working as well. It’s important to know when to hit the water so you can make the most of your session.
The waves here are primarily right-handers and can get pretty exciting, particularly when the swell comes from the NorthWest or even straight North. Performing best around 3ft (about 1 meter), the waves break over an uneven reef and sand, which adds a bit of variety to the ride. As you get closer to the jetty, you’ll encounter a fun take-off that leads to several wall to shoulder sections. Be aware that the tide affects how the waves behave, and it’s usually more enjoyable at low to mid or even high tides. Beginners can find their place at Les Flots Bleus, where the waves are small and manageable.
When it comes to wind, an East breeze is ideal to keep the conditions clean. The paddle-out can feel long, so be prepared for a bit of a workout, especially if currents are present. On good days when the swell is maxing out, you'll notice a mix of surfers – experts taking on the challenging sections at the jetty, intermediates enjoying the action at Insides, and beginners sticking to the smaller waves. It’s a spot that tends to bring everyone together, offering something for each level of surfer.
