Ciboure/Socoa is a surf spot located inside the bay, right by the town beach. It’s a mix of sandy and reef breaks, and while it can get pretty crowded, it’s worth checking out, especially when the swell picks up. The area has some nice views, with the Fort Socoa being a notable landmark. While it’s not the most consistent spot around, it does have some moments that could be fun for surfers aware of the local conditions.
When the waves come in, surfers can expect a few different options. The optimal swell direction is Northwest, and it handles swell sizes starting at around 1 ft (0.3 m). The break is a mix of reef and sand, with waves breaking both left and right. You’ll find that it works better at low, mid, or high tide, but a SouthWest wind is preferable for the best conditions. Keep in mind that it can be a bit localized, and it’s really best suited for intermediate surfers. While you can catch waves here even when conditions aren't perfect, don’t expect epic sessions every time you hit the water.
For those looking for variety, there’s a hard-to-access localized reef called Le Port near the entrance of the River Nivelle. It can work a handful of times a year but is not very reliable. Just remember, the waves can vary significantly based on the swell direction and the strength of the wind, so it’s good to pay attention to the local forecasts if you plan to surf here.
