More about Sand Island surfspot

Screened by the hulking warehouses and shipyards on the industrialised Sand Island, this State Recreation Area and it’s brilliant white ribbon of sand holds a mish mash of reefy peaks. Mainly surfed at the east end near the tower where waves can break outside and reform nicely, so something for all abilities.

General: Despite its proximity to Town, Sand Island is often one of the best places to beat the crowds -- seems almost hidden in plain sight. There are a few different peaks to choose from that offer both rights and lefts. Water quality is often suspect with harbor entrances on each side, one of which leads to a large industrial harbor. This spot is known for shark sightings as well, following commercial fishing boats going into the harbor. Tides: Medium Size: Head high-2X overhead Wind: Calm or offshore from WNW to N to ENE, with N as straight offshore. Swell: Anything from the SE to SW, but usually from the S to SW. Bottom: Reef Paddling: Pretty easy paddling all around. Spot Rating: Average most of the time but can get very fun without heavy crowds.

All levels, but depends on size.

Easy. Located at Sand Island State Recreation Area.

Summer. From around April through October.

Crowd Factor: Not very crowded usually, but can get pretty crowded during a fun-size swell on the weekends. Local Vibe: Depends on the session shift, usually mellow early. Humility and respect appreciated.

Camping, showers and laid-back uncrowded feel. Sewer outfall offshore so avoid onshores and a reputation for big sharks (but no attacks). Spooky outside reefs toward the airport require a boat.

Can be bad at times due to harbor entrances on both sides.

Reef, sharks.
