South Shore - Ala Moana Park surf guide
Surf: General: The South Shore's Ala Moana area is comprised of several good spots. From east to west there is Kaisers, Rockpiles, Ala Moana Bowls, and Magic Island -- all within a half-mile stretch of coast. Each spot offers different wave options, ranging from rights and lefts to barrels and bowls. With each spot, however, comes healthy crowds of varying degrees of skill level.
Tides: Medium
Size: Chest high-well overhead
Wind: Calm or offshore from NW to E, with NE straight offshore.
Swell: Anything from the SE to SW, but usually from the S to SW.
Bottom: Reef. Shallow and sharp for most of it.
Paddling: Long paddles to and from beach, but not bad once you're out there.
Spot Rating: Lots of consistently super fun breaks all within close-proximity of each other.
Access: Access water to whichever spot you desire from the breakwater and channels, or paddle straight out from the little beach next to the Ala Moana parking lot across the shallow reef platform (a little sketchy on low tide).
Crowds: Crowd Factor: All the spots through town are pretty much always crowded at waist high or bigger, but early bird gets the worm sometimes.
Local Vibe: Will range from spot-to-spot, but all are usually at least somewhat competitive. Humility and respect a must..
Environment: Nearby harbor, so pollution is always a factor, especially after significant rainfall.
Hazards: Shallow reef and crowds.
Season: Summer. From around April through October.
