Sawtell is a surf spot located on the south side of the Sawtell headland. It features a rivermouth that can produce some decent waves, especially when the swell is coming from the Northeast. This spot is generally more suited for beginners, making it a good place for those just starting to surf. The sandbars can shift, so conditions can vary from day to day. Access is available off the rocks past the pool area, but it's best to be cautious about the surrounding environment.
The surfing here can be hit or miss, depending on the conditions. The ideal swell direction is Northeast, but it can also handle swells coming from the South. The beach break produces both left and right waves, with swell sizes that work well at around 1 ft (0.3 m) or bigger. Generally, you’ll find the best waves at low, mid, or high tides. While the winds from the Northwest are preferred, keep an eye on the conditions as they can get unruly, especially when it’s big.
If you're coming to Sawtell, be aware that the surf can create bad rips, particularly during dropping tides. The main surf beach to the north is patrolled and usually has easier waves, which might be a better option if you are looking for a more manageable session.
