Overview
Silver Strand is a powerful, mile-long beachbreak in Oxnard, framed by the Channel Islands Harbor south jetty and the Port Hueneme north jetty. It is a well-known stretch that often turns up in surf magazines and videos, even when it isn't named. The waves break over sand and peel both left and right.
When It Works
Silver Strand almost always has some kind of surf, and it turns on with epic barrels through the winter. It draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest, with west swell the best match, and it takes a south swell nicely too. The break is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft. Consistency is moderate, so count on worthwhile windows when the setup lines up rather than surf every day.
Wind and Tide
Look for an east offshore wind to clean things up. It works on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an expert-level beachbreak with real power, and the lineup gets very busy when it's on. The area has a history of localism, so be mindful of attitudes both in and out of the water.
Access
Access is via Ocean Drive in Oxnard, where you'll find restrooms and a surf shop, plus free roadside parking. Runoff can pollute the water after rain, and given a history of auto vandalism, park strategically.
