South End surf guide

South End is a popular surf spot located near a pier, making it a convenient place for surfers to catch some waves. It’s known for its laid-back vibe, but it can get crowded, especially when the swell is right. Parking is metered, so be prepared to find a spot before hitting the beach.

The spot works best on low to mid tide and can handle swell sizes from about 1 meter (3 ft) to 3 meters (10 ft). On the south side of the pier, you’ll find a well-shaped right, especially during sizable nor'easters, while the north side features a shorebreak known as The Box. Sandbars here can produce quick, small barrels on south swells. The waves break over sand and can be ridden left or right, catering to beginners, intermediates, and experts alike. While the generally preferred wind direction is from the southwest, on the right conditions, this place can be fun for any board type, whether it's a shortboard, fish, funboard, longboard, or even for bodyboarding and kitesurfing.

Be cautious of the crowds, especially next to the pier, as it can get packed during the right conditions. Accessing the water involves dodging people on the boardwalk, so keep your eyes open. The local vibe is pretty mellow, making it a decent spot to enjoy your time in the water. Just remember that conditions can vary with the seasons, especially with tropical storms in the late summer and fall and nor'easters in the winter.
