Stanley's Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Stanley's is a hollow right that surfers lost back in 1970, when the original break, named after the diner that once sat in front of it, was cleared to make room for Highway 101. Its ghost still surfaces nearby as Offramps, a quick, hollow right that peels over a shallow sandbar. It doesn't match the wave that came before it and only shows its face when everything lines up, but it's worth a look when it does.

When It Works

Offramps is a right-breaking beach wave over a sand bottom. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 1.5 m / 5 ft and draws swell from west-southwest to west (WSW-W). The better windows come through spring, autumn, and winter, roughly February to May. It's a modest wave that doesn't break all that often, so time your visit for when the swell lines up.

Wind and Tide

Look for east-northeast (ENE) offshore wind, with a workable wind window running from north-northeast to east-southeast (NNE-ESE). It breaks on low and mid tide, and a rising tide is the better call.

Local Tips

The lineup stays quiet and can feel a little reserved. Offramps suits intermediate and expert surfers, and it's ridable on just about anything, from shortboards and fish to funboards, longboards, bodyboards, or bodysurfing. The paddle out isn't too bad. Watch for rocks, and expect rougher water after rain.

Access

Take the Seacliff Exit off Highway 101 and you'll be right on top of it. Access is easy, just follow the sign.
