Oil Piers is a surf spot located about a half-mile south of Mussel Shoals in Ventura County. Once a popular getaway for surfers, it’s become just an average beach break over the years. Though the memories of its prime condition linger, the surf scene here doesn't quite measure up to what it used to be. It's a spot that has seen better days but still attracts a decent crowd, especially during the summer.
The waves at Oil Piers can range from waist-high (around 0.9 meters) to head-high (approximately 2.1 meters) on good days, with the potential to go up to double overhead (around 3 meters) on bigger swells. The preferred swell directions are from the West and West-Southwest, which works well with the sand bottom. The best conditions typically show up with NE winds, and the ideal tides are low to mid. Surfers of intermediate to expert levels can ride here, and you can use a variety of boards like shortboards, fish, funboards, or longboards. Just be prepared for the crowd, as it can get busy, especially during the summer months.
Access is simple; you can park in the Pier parking lot. Keep in mind that the local vibe is pretty average, with a high crowd factor, which means you won’t be surfing alone. While the environment is generally manageable, it can become a bit rough after it rains. Always be cautious of pier pilings and look out for any glass in the parking lot. Oil Piers is open year-round and can serve up a decent session if you hit it right.
