Stanley's is a surf spot that sits where a diner used to be, right off Highway 101. While it was destroyed in 1970, surfers still talk about what it used to be like and how its spirit continues with a spot called Offramps. Though not as good as the original, it can offer some fun, quick rides when the conditions are right. You can reach it easily by taking the Seacliff Exit from Highway 101.
This spot works best with a west to west-southwest swell and handles sizes from about 3 to 5 feet (0.9 to 1.5 meters). It can get a hollow right during medium tide with low to mid conditions being preferable. The bottom is mostly sand, and while the paddling isn't too tough, most surfers here are intermediate or expert. Winds from the north-northeast to east are ideal for a better experience. Just keep in mind, this right-hander is a bit of a shadow of its former glory.
While crowds are usually nonexistent, it's wise to keep an eye out for rocks in the area. The spot is generally manageable, and although conditions can be a bit rough after rain, it still has its charm. You'll find that Stanley's is most enjoyable during the spring months, and if you're into mixing it up, you can bring shortboards, fish, funboards, longboards, bodyboards, or even bodysurf.
