States Avenue surf guide

States Avenue, also known as Gas Chambers, is a well-known surf spot in Atlantic City. It’s located between the old Gardens Pier to the north and the Steel Pier to the south. This area is famous for its powerful waves that break close to the beach, especially on a southeast swell. While it can get quite crowded, especially during peak season, it's regarded as a significant surf location in the region.

The waves here can range from waist high (about 1 meter) to well overhead (up to 3 meters). The best conditions are usually found at low to mid tide, particularly with swell coming from the southeast. You can also catch some good rights and lefts off both groins, with the lefts being more prominent in the center of the break. The bottom is primarily sandy, but be mindful of shallow spots, especially on the lower tides. If you're into shortboards, fish, funboards, longboards, or bodyboards, this spot will accommodate your needs. Paddling can be a bit tougher on bigger days, but it's generally manageable.

Access to States Avenue is straightforward, but parking can be tricky, so early arrival is advisable. The crowd factor can be moderate to heavy, especially during autumn and winter months when the swells are at their best. Overall, it's a popular playground for surfers, but just keep in mind the potential rip currents and that you might share the water with quite a few others.
