Towan surf guide
Surf: In big swells and SW storms the Towan to Great Western stretch can be the only surfable option for miles. Hollow when on but tends to close-out.
Environment: Horribly crowded when small in the summer. Harbour left can get good. Site of proposed artificial reef. Small car park at south end.
Surf: General: The most sheltered of the Newquay beaches, and hence a popular spot during huge southwesterly storms when the waves here can be clean and offshore. A left breaks off the harbour wall, but the rest of the beach is either fast short lefts and rights, or a huge close out. This doesn't stop if from being super busy when breaking and carnage can ensue. Fun if you need to get wet and this is your only option - but keep your eyes open.
Tides: Low to mid.
Size: Waist to shoulder high.
Wind: SW to SE
Swell: W/SW
Bottom: Sand and rock patches near high.
Paddling: No real channel so lots of paddling.
Spot Rating: Mostly a close-out. Fun for beginners when small.
Access: A couple of car park options close to the beach.
Crowds: Crowd Factor: Busy in storm swells.
Local Vibe: Either a chilled summer beginners spot or winter chaos.
Environment: Pretty clean.
Hazards: Crowds, stray boards, rocks.
Season: A haven December - February.
