Velzyland surf guide

Velzyland, named after California surfer Dale Velzy, is located almost a mile north of Sunset Beach. This spot can get really crowded, especially on weekends, so be prepared to share the waves. It sits in a big bay beyond Backyards and is influenced by the nearby Phantom Reef, which helps focus incoming swells. The water here is typically clean and clear, making the surfing experience visually appealing.

When it comes to surfing at Velzyland, the waves can be pretty fun. The place can handle swells between 4ft and 7ft (1.2m to 2.1m), and the optimal direction for swells is Northwest. You’ll find both right and left waves here, but the longer rides are on the right. These rights can offer fast, hollow sections that are great for ripping. The lefts tend to be shorter, so you need to watch out for getting caught inside, especially since there's no paddle channel back out. Mid to low tides work best, and Southeast winds can create ideal conditions.

This spot is best suited for expert surfers, so intermediates might want to check out nearby Freddyland instead. It’s a popular spot for local surfers, and respecting the line-up is important to avoid any localism issues. You’ll need to paddle for longer rides on the rights, as they can really stretch out. If you're planning a session, make sure you have your shortboard or bodyboard ready and enjoy what Velzyland has to offer!
