Vetch's Reef is located next to the Natal Bay harbour entrance. It's a unique surfing spot known for its right pointbreak over a semi-submerged old harbour jetty. The waves here can be pretty impressive when the conditions are right, often throwing up solid barrels or nice walls to carve into, especially with the right swell and wind combinations.
The best surf comes from a NorthEast swell, though SouthWest swells can also work. This spot handles swell sizes around 4ft (about 1.2 meters) and is known for breaking over boulders. When it comes to the waves, expect reef breaks that go right. The ideal wind direction is from the SouthWest, and you'll want to catch these waves during high tide for the best experience. Keep in mind that this spot is more suitable for expert surfers, so it might not be the best choice if you’re still learning the ropes.
When you’re out there, be cautious of the ocean floor, which can have stonefish and urchins. Also, be aware of the deeper waters off Pinnacle Rock, as great whites can sometimes pass through the area. While it can get crowded, it’s often less packed than other spots around town, giving you a bit more room to enjoy your session.
