Punchy shifting peaks breaking over ever-changing sand and shingle bars at the mouth of the Waiapu River.

From Gisborne town centre drive east on Gladstone Road, onto Wainui Road, State Highway 35, towards Wainui. Continue past Wainui on Moana Road and onto Whangara Road and keep heading north. Continue past Tokomaru Bay and Waipiro Bay, then turn left onto Te Araroa Road, State Highway 35. At Tikitiki turn left to stay on Te Araroa Road, then turn right onto Rangitukia Road. Turn right onto Beach Road, down to the beach on the north side of the Waiapu River mouth.

Rarely crowded on a quiet stretch. 4WD helps with access.
