Wilderness Beach is a surf spot located on the southern coast, known for its beautiful sandy stretches. This beach is mainly a summer destination that relies on smaller, peaky southern swells. It’s a place where you can find some decent waves but keep in mind that it can often be a bit unpredictable, with days when it feels out of control or just too messy to surf. The vibe here is laid-back, making it a good spot for surfers looking to chill.
The surf here does best with south swells coming in and any north winds. The waves can handle sizes as small as 2 feet (about 0.6 meters), and you can catch both left and right breaks, which is nice for variety. The beach setup works over sand, so it’s relatively friendly for beginners looking to ride some waves. Low to mid tide is usually the sweet spot, and while it can be surfed at high tide, the waves might not be as good. Just remember, although it's beginner-friendly, you'll want to be cautious as some days can feel quite sharky out there.
For a different option, check out Kaimansriver just a bit further east. It’s another spot that handles light winds and offers smaller swells. This area has some nostalgic vibes, as it was featured in *The Endless Summer*. If you want to gauge the conditions before heading out to Wilderness, Dolphin Point Lookout is an excellent vantage point to monitor the swell.
