33rd St surf guide

33rd St is a surf spot located by a short groin in front of the Holiday Inn Express in Galveston. It’s near a well-known local eatery, The Spot. While it can be worth checking out during your drive down the seawall, many surfers find better peaks in the area.

The surf at 33rd St can range from waist to head high (about 0.9 to 2.1 meters) and generally works best on medium to high tides. It can handle swells from 2 ft up to 7 ft (around 0.6 to 2.1 meters) coming from various directions like South, Southeast, and even East. The waves typically break over sand and can offer both left and right-handers. The preferred winds are from the West, Northwest, and North, with the best sessions often showing up during late summer to fall and then again from late winter to mid-spring. If you’re a beginner or intermediate surfer, there are some fun waves to ride here, but more advanced surfers might leave wanting more.

Access to the spot is pretty easy with paid parking available on the seawall. The crowd factor is minimal, so you can usually find your own peak without too much hassle. Just keep in mind that paddling can be a bit tough, especially if the surf is breaking outside the jetty. Overall, if you're in Galveston, you might want to explore your options before settling on 33rd St.
