61st Street surf guide
Surf: 61st street stands out as the best option for shortboarders since good sandbanks usually form N of the jetty and T head pier. With the right conditions, peaks appear anywhere along the extensive seawall spreading the crowds.
Environment: Still gets pollution and the roadside meters fill up quickly.
Surf: General: A jetty/pier combination that provides a consistent bottom, 61st Street has a jetty that, while the north side tends to be better, either side can fire.
Tides: Medium to high
Size: Waist to a few feet overhead
Wind: N, NW; WNW with a swell
Swell: S, SE
Bottom: Sand.
Paddling: The rip by the jetty makes easy to get out, however, most days the longshore currents will make it tough stay in position on the pier bowls.
Spot Rating: Fun peaks and a few barrels when there is swell.
Access: Easy, paid parking on the seawall.
Crowds: Crowd Factor: Dense lineup at the best peaks, spread out the farther from the jetty you get.
Local Vibe: Can be competitive on the good days at the best peaks.
Environment: Proximity to Houston shipping channel and runoff from Galveston equals often not the best water quality.
Hazards: Angry fishermen.
Season: Late summer/fall; late winter to mid-spring
