8th Ave. South is a nondescript beachbreak located south of Jax Pier. It’s pretty typical for Florida, offering a relaxed vibe without the pressure of the more popular spots nearby. This area tends to be just as consistent as any other beachbreak around, mostly serving up average waves. It’s spacious enough for surfers to spread out, which is a nice bonus if you want some room to catch your own waves.
The surf here can handle a range of swell sizes, typically from 2 to 12 feet (about 0.6 to 3.6 meters). The best swells generally come from the North, NorthEast, East, and SouthEast directions. You can expect a mix of lefts and rights, but the spot is known for its beach breaks that can produce waist-high to a little overhead waves. It works best during a low to mid tide. For wind, it’s ideal when it’s coming from the South-SouthWest to NorthNorthWest. Paddling is easy, but things can get a bit more challenging when the swells are bigger, so be prepared for some moderate effort.
Crowds are usually a non-issue here, making it a good spot for both beginners and intermediate surfers. The water may look murky due to natural tannins, which can sometimes create a slight change in water clarity. The overall local vibe is quite laid back, which is perfect for chilling out after your session. Most of the good days to surf are between fall and spring, especially during hurricane season when conditions can get fun.
