Talbot Island is a secluded spot located a few miles south of Fernandina, just off A1A. To access the island, you’ll need to pay five bucks for parking ($4 if you’re solo). Once you’re in, you’ll find a stretch of beach with various sandbars spread over a mile. It's a nice spot if you're looking for a quieter surf experience, although it can get a bit crowded when the surf is firing.
When it comes to surfing, Talbot Island really shines on a good, clean groundswell. It can handle swell sizes from about 1 meter to 3 meters (3 feet to 10 feet). Waves here can break both to the right and left, making it suitable for different riding styles. The best times to catch some good surf are on a low to mid tide. If you're planning to hit it when it's shoulder-high to double overhead, just know that it can be a bit challenging, especially for beginners. The wave types are beach breaks and generally work better with winds coming from the southwest and west. Keep in mind that this spot can be sharkier than others, so awareness is key.
Parking is easy, and you won’t have a steep hike to the beach, which is a plus. Crowds can build up quickly when word gets out about good conditions, so it's smart to time your visits. The local vibe here has mellowed out a bit over the years, but it's best to be respectful in the water. Autumn, winter, and spring are your prime seasons to surf this spot, especially during hurricane swells. Bring a shortboard and be ready to enjoy the ride!
