Ackergill is a surf spot located on the northern coast with a unique setup that appeals to seasoned surfers. It features two reefs that are known for being quite inconsistent, so don’t expect to catch waves every time you head out. When the conditions do line up, it can be a pretty thrilling ride, but those days are rare, so it’s good to keep that in mind when planning your trip.
The waves at Ackergill work best with an east swell direction. For optimal conditions, you're looking for the swell to come from the east or northeast, preferably around 2 feet (0.6 meters). The waves break over a rocky ledge and they primarily offer right-handers. The best time to surf here is during low tide, as the reefs need that low water to really fire up. Keep in mind that this spot is best suited for expert surfers who are comfortable navigating the sharp, heavy waves.
Getting to the waves is straightforward; you can park near the jetty at Ackergillshore and paddle out through the harbor. If you’re lucky enough to catch the right conditions, it can be an enjoyable session, but remember that you might not always be greeted with ideal surf.
