Overview
Ano Nuevo State Reserve is a sheltered cove with a hard-hitting beachbreak in a pristine natural setting in the Red Triangle. Swells bounce off the cliff and can form wedging A-frame righthanders that bowl into the inside.
It is very hollow, very powerful, very shallow, and very sharky. Sea lions and elephant seals breed on Aรฑo Nuevo Island about half a mile offshore.
When It Works
The spot is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft and is moderately consistent through spring, summer, autumn, and winter. It breaks left and right over sand, with sand and rock also noted around the break.
The optimal swell direction is southwest. It can also work with south, west-southwest, northwest, and long-period west swell. Peaky south to southwest swells are a good setup here.
Wind and Tide
The listed offshore wind direction is northeast. Northwest wind can also blow offshore here, though it is linked with cold upwelling.
Low to mid tide is listed, with a rising tide better. Incoming to high tide can help the bounce off the cliff.
Local Tips
This is a shortboard-only wave and suits intermediate surfers. The paddle is not too bad, but the wave is tight, shallow, and powerful enough to break fins or hurt you.
Crowds can be moderate to high, especially because the takeoff area is tight. Expect other surfers around when it is working. Sharks, very cold water, and the Red Triangle setting are serious factors here.
Access
Ano Nuevo State Reserve is a state park. Use the paid car park, then walk in. Restrooms and a telephone are nearby, and the area is generally clean. Keep an eye on your car in the parking lot.
