Balandra surf guide

Balandra is located on the East Coast of Trinidad and is often regarded as one of the best surfing spots on the island. Despite being affected by east-northeast trade winds, the waves here can be impressive, especially when the sandbars are on point. Locally known as "Rough Side," this beach can deliver powerful surf that attracts both visitors and locals. It’s a good option if you're looking to catch some waves, as it's one of the most consistent spots around, usually offering something to ride even on flat days.

The surf at Balandra can handle northeast swells, ranging from 3 to 6 feet (about 1 to 2 meters). When conditions align, you can find both left and right beach breaks that provide good rides. It's best to hit this spot with a northwesterly wind, and you can surf at any tide, although low to mid tides tend to be preferable. Keep in mind that this spot is better suited for intermediate surfers, so it might be a bit much for beginners. The bottom is a mix of sand and rocks, and paddling can get more challenging as the swell size increases.

Access to Balandra is easy, just park at the fishing depot and walk past the coconut trees. Crowds usually aren't a problem here, making it a chill spot to enjoy some surfing. The local vibe is pretty mellow, so just be respectful, and it should stay that way. Overall, Balandra is a reliable choice for consistent surf throughout the year, best enjoyed in the spring, summer, autumn, and winter months.
