Airports in Tobago is a well-known surf spot located right at the end of the runway. It's a place where surfers can look forward to some action, especially during the winter months. The waves here are a bit punchy and tend to pack a punch, making it an interesting spot to visit. Although it offers decent surf, it’s not the most consistent spot around, so be prepared for some variability.
The waves at Airports break over an uneven reef, producing right-handers that can be hollow and fun. The optimal swell direction is from the north, and it handles swell sizes around 4-6 feet (1.5 - 2 meters) pretty well. Low tide is the best time to catch the good waves here, but mid tide can work too. If the wind is coming from the east, you’ll have a better chance of scoring clean conditions. This spot is generally suited for intermediate surfers, so make sure you’re comfortable in the water before paddling out.
If you’re looking to enjoy some time in the water, keep in mind that while Airports can produce good waves, it doesn’t have the same consistency as other spots like Mount Irvine or Sunset Right. It’s definitely worth checking out if you find yourself in Tobago, especially when the swell is up.
