Batu Karas Reef surf guide

Batu Karas Reef, also known as Speed Reef, is located about a 15-minute walk north from The Point. This spot is a bit more challenging than nearby breaks, but it can still be a fun place to surf. The wave works over a lava rock reef for around 150 meters, providing a decent ride with a bit more push compared to The Point.

This right-hand wave really prefers mid to high tide and works best with south swells and west winds. It can handle swell sizes around 3 feet (about 0.9 meters) and is mainly a wet season spot. However, during the dry season, you can still catch it early in the morning before the southeast trades start kicking in. While intermediate surfers will find it manageable, advanced surfers might notice that it can feel a bit fat and slow on smaller days due to the nature of the wave.

One of the great things about Batu Karas Reef is that it can handle different swell directions like southeast and southwest. So, if youโ€™re up for some adventure, a motorbike ride from Batu Karas opens up access to spots that pick up more swell, giving you even more options to explore.
