Batu Karas Reef, also known as Speed Reef, is a fun right-hander that canters across a lava rock reef for around 150 metres. The take-off comes easy and the walls run fast and workable, giving it noticeably more push than nearby The Point, which sits about a 15-minute walk to the south. It adapts well to surfers of any level.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from southwest through southeast, with south swell the best match, and it works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. It's moderately consistent and mainly a wet-season wave. During the dry season you can still catch it early in the morning, before the southeast trades come up and blow it out.
Wind and Tide
Look for west offshore wind. The reef prefers high tide and will also break at mid, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Batu Karas Reef suits intermediate surfers, and the lineup stays fairly quiet when it's on. On smaller days, advanced surfers can find The Point next door a little fat and slow, so the reef's extra speed makes it the more rewarding option.
