Boilers/Ranger Station surf guide

Boilers/Ranger Station is a surf spot located on Pea Island, and it’s known for the wreck of a ship that has created some interesting sandbars. These bars work best with NE swells and lower tides, offering some decent waves. The area has a mix of settings, with the main features being the deep sand and the natural beauty of the landscape.

The surf here can be quite variable, but it typically handles swell sizes from about 1.2m to 3m (4ft to 10ft). You're likely to see both left and right waves here, making it versatile for different surfers. The best swells come from the NE, but it can also work with N and S swells. The lagoon-like setup means the waves can be hit or miss, but when it’s good, you can get some long walling lefts and shorter rights. Paddling is something to keep in mind since south swells might create tricky conditions. A low to mid tide is preferable for the best results.

Access to the spot requires a walk over the dunes from the free parking area. There is no lifeguard on duty, so be aware of the local wildlife and keep an eye out for sharks near the wreck. The atmosphere is pretty laid-back; you’ll find it’s more about exploration. Crowds can be avoided if you steer clear of the well-trodden spots, so you might have better luck if you scout around a bit. Also, be mindful of the mosquitoes in the area, as they can be pretty pesky.
