Boston Bay, located in Portland, Jamaica, is a well-known surf spot that has gained recognition for its scenic beauty and vibrant culture. This spot features a stunning cliff cove with a picturesque white sand beach and clear Caribbean waters. While it attracts a mix of locals, expats, and tourists, it can get busy, especially when the waves are up.
The surf here can range from chest high to about 3 feet overhead (approximately 0.9 to 1 meter). The optimal swell direction is from the Northeast, with surfable swells also coming from the East. The lefts break off the outside rock, and you’ll find rights on the other side of the bay. If you're lucky, sometimes you’ll catch a nice A-frame right down the middle. Generally, the paddling is easy, but it can become challenging during hurricane swells. This spot is less consistent than Long Bay, making it more suitable for beginners who prefer the gentler, soft breakers. You can ride a variety of board types here, including shortboards, funboards, longboards, and fish.
Access to Boston Bay is pretty straightforward; you can park right there by the beach. The local vibe is mostly mellow, so you can enjoy your session without too much hassle. Make sure to keep an eye out for the reef as it can be a hazard, especially when you’re paddling out. The best time to visit for surfing is during the seasons of spring, autumn, and winter, specifically from November to March and August to September. Don’t forget to grab some of that renowned spicy jerk chicken after your surf!
