Cape Sebastian is located about 7 miles (11 km) down the coast and offers a mix of surfing opportunities. The south side of this spot can bring some decent conditions to check out, especially when there are howling offshore winds. The beach features a sandbar that builds up behind Hunters Island, which contributes to the surf scene here. It's a good location to target when looking for a surf session, but be aware that it can get crowded on weekends, especially when the swell is large.
The surf at Cape Sebastian works best with a northwest swell. It can handle swell sizes starting from 2 feet (0.6 meters) and can produce long, loping right waves breaking over boulders and sand. Most surfers find the conditions are best around low to mid tide. On a good day, you can enjoy pleasant rides, but you’ll want to be at least an intermediate surfer to handle the nuances of the break. If the wind is southeast, you're in luck, as that direction tends to create favorable conditions.
Beyond just the surfing, this area from Cape Sebastian to the Pistol River is known as a popular spot for windsurfing as well. So, if you’re into catching some wind or watching others ride it, you’ll find company here. Just keep in mind that while the surf can be enjoyable, it can also be hit or miss depending on the day.
