Chacahua surf guide

Chacahua is a unique surf spot located in Mexico, surrounded by a system of estuarine lagoons and swamps within a national park. Accessing the waves can be a bit tricky due to this geography, with a local ferry being the main way to get to the eastern side. The area has a laid-back vibe and a small community that’s worth checking out if you're looking for something a little off the beaten path.

The surf here can be pretty decent, especially with the right conditions. It loves a South-West swell direction, but you'll also find it works with South and North-West swells. Generally, it can handle waves up to about 3 ft (0.9 m) and occasionally even bigger. The main break is a fast, tubing right that forms off a sandbar near the rivermouth jetty. The best time to hit the waves is during low to mid tides, and you’ll want to catch it when the wind is coming from the North-West. It’s mainly suited for intermediate surfers, so if you’re comfortable in the water, you should have a good time.

While the surf might be inconsistent at times, there are plenty of surrounding beach peaks to explore. Just keep in mind that the environment can be a bit rough with strong rips coming from the lagoon. The community is small, and it has a reputation for offering basic accommodations, so don't expect anything luxurious. If you're looking for a chill surf adventure and are ready to navigate a few challenges, Chacahua might be a good spot for your next trip.
