Ditch Plains surf guide

Ditch Plains is a well-known surf spot located on Long Island, famous for its consistent waves and crowded lineups. It’s a place where both locals and visitors gather to catch some waves. The vibe can get hectic, especially during peak surf season, but it’s a staple for those seeking a good surf experience. The surf here is suitable for various board types, including shortboards, fish, funboards, and longboards.

The surf here tends to work best with southeast swells, and it handles sizes ranging from 4 feet (1.2 meters) to 12 feet (3.7 meters). Expect waves that break over a mix of boulders and sand, offering both left and right breaks. You can get workable A-frames, especially appealing to longboarders, though some days will see steeper rights and swifter lefts further down the beach. Ditch Plains can take on any tide, from low to high, but it’s good to note that northwest winds are preferable for the best conditions. Paddling can be a workout, especially on bigger days with noticeable currents.

Access to the beach is pretty straightforward, but be prepared for crowded conditions both in the water and in the parking lot. It's not uncommon to encounter some hostilities among surfers due to the density of people, so be mindful of the local vibe. Despite the crowd issues, Ditch Plains remains a reliable choice for surfing, especially during the autumn and winter months when the waves can get really good.
