Doran Beach surf guide

Doran Beach is located just a mile south of downtown Bodega Bay. This spot features a soft sandy bottom and is mostly shelled from the elements, making it a go-to for local surfers, especially when the conditions get rougher elsewhere. It sits nicely facing south, which helps when the winds come in from the north. It's a popular choice for beginners looking to ride some waves, but it can also deliver some fun waves during good conditions.

The surf here is mainly a beach break, typically working best with swells from the south or long-period northwest swells. Wave heights can range from about chest high (1.2 meters) to overhead (2.1 meters), with the ideal conditions coming during north winds, especially in spring. You can expect both left and right breaking waves, but don't get your hopes up for long rides; the waves can close out pretty quickly. High tide tends to work out better with fewer close-outs, but it can still be hit or miss. Even with a mediocre rating, it's worth checking out if you're itching to catch some surf.

Accessing Doran Beach is pretty straightforward; just take the Doran Beach Road off Highway 1. The crowd factor can be minimal, especially if the winds aren't peaking, so it's a nice spot to find some space. The vibe is generally mellow, which makes it a great place to chill out after riding the waves. If you're looking to camp nearby, that's an option too. Just remember that while it's mostly safe here, there can be the occasional shark sighting, so keep an eye out!
